Successful International Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Successful International - Assignment Example By knowing their culture, their mindset can be according to the traditions and culture of the place they are relocated. This allows the individual to adjust better and refine their adjustments to be more accurate. In this case, Fred Bailey seems to be very excited about his shift, thus showing his interest. Cross-culture training is vital to ensure that the individual knows exactly how to react and behave in the given situation which also improves the adjustment to a job (Eschbach, Parker& Stoeberl). This training includes not only the procedures of the job but also how to interact with the nationals of the host country and the environment in general. But the problem during this pre-departure preparation is the individual's concentration on logistical problems which prevents them from paying attention to any form of training. Fred Bailey Previous experience in the international arena is considered as an asset to help in adjusting to a new atmosphere. However, many individuals lack this knowledge. Thus, there ability to the deep culture is greatly reduced. Without any pre-departure training, many individuals face culture shock and find it difficult to adjust to the new environment. The organization should also ensure that their employees are aware of the degree of difference between the organization in their own country and the one they are changing to. If the foreign institute has a different operational method then it will be harder for the expatriate to fit into the organizational structure. For instance, Bailey does not understand the Japanese inability to hold proper communication with the head of the organization. All of them hold are unable to hold a interactive discussion with Bailey which leads to frustration on his side. Also, it is very hard for an employee with a family to move to a new country, especially if the logistics include a family. By providing support to the individual, the organization can remove problems like finding housing and schooling. In this way non-work problems can be easily solved, allowing the expatriate to adjust easily to the general environment. In this case Fred Bailey is prevented from being too happy about the move because of the wife and children that will accompany him. Not only does this curtail the interest in the new job but the children's shift in schools and environment will be an added burden on the parents' minds. Along with this, Fred's wife finds the move to be difficult and eventually ends up wanting to leave instead of adjust. This is especially important when the native and host culture are greatly different. Adjustment for the employee and their partner's interaction with the environment is difficult because of their inability to behave appropriately. The greater the cultural difference between the environments, the easier it is to make cultural mistakes which can lead to immense frustration about the errors (Lowe, Downes & Kroeck). The co-workers in the host organization play a vital role in allowing the new member to fit into the environment. They provide emotional support to the new employee with their acceptance and also teach them how to follow the ropes. In this case, Bailey hardly gets any feedback from his fellow employees. Instead he feels alienated and different from the

Leadership in Teams and Decision Groups Research Paper

Leadership in Teams and Decision Groups - Research Paper Example There are various types of teams in an organization include functional work teams, self managed teams, top executive teams and cross-functional teams. The differences in the teams emanate from the autonomy in determining the team’s mission, authority of the team leader, stability of team members and diversity of the members. Cross-functional teams These teams are formed in an organization to enhance coordination of interdependent activities among the diverse units. Cross-functional teams are composed of representative from all the units and sometimes include representatives from outside the organization like suppliers and partners (McCallin, 2003). To ensure their smooth operations, the teams are given the role to plan and conduct complex work that demands high level of coordination and cooperation among the parties. This type of team is formed when an organization is involved in the development of new product or in the introduction of a new information system that affect the operations of the different units. The members of the cross-functional teams will always remain the same individuals from other particular units and most cross-functional teams are temporary i.e. they are formed to achieve specific organization mission. In order to benefit the organization, the teams must be flexible and efficient in deploying resources and personnel in order to unfold the solution to the problems and challenges. The representatives from the various units should be persons with expertise to help add value to the team’s decision. These teams have the potential to generate new and innovative ideas from the diverse members with differing backgrounds and improved coordination (McCallin, 2003). Moreover, the team have to view the problems in a wider perspective if the organization successes to be achieved. However, cross-functional teams are faced with challenges. The use of jargon creates communication barrier that might impair the realization of the team goals. Secondly, the loyalty of the members to their respective functions should not override the objectives of the team but rather focus on how their diversity can help in realizing the team’s objectives. Managing the disagreements and tight deadline is further essential in the successful operation of the team. A leader with good interpersonal skills and expert position power is needed. This will ensure he leads the people with conflicting interests and resolve the likely problems with the power that is vested on his position (2011). Additionally, the leader should have technical expertise, project management skills, and cognitive skills that will enable understanding of the complex problems. Finally, the leader of a cross functional team should also have political skills necessary in formation of coalitions and in gaining resources. Apart from the skills, a cross-functional leader needs to exhibit some leadership behaviors i.e. being visionary to help in formulating strategic obje ctives and generating ideas. The leader should also require to have the ability to organize and plan activities by creating deadlines and standards. Besides, the leader should be self-integrating i.e. promoting cooperation and equal participating on top of dealing with the external parties. A cross-functional leader should be one who can forecast emerging challenges and problems and influence outsiders. Self managed work teams As opposed to the cross

Should the United States go to war in 1917 Essay

Should the United States go to war in 1917 - Essay Example All of these reasons should prevent the United States from entering the war. The first reason not to go to war would be Germany’s degree of threat. Germany has a low level of threat level towards the U.S. Germany’s fight is not with the U.S. If the U.S. went to war over a country that is non-threatening, it would only waste our resources to fight real threats on U.S. soil. It is true that German submarines killed American citizens. However, these American citizens were on British vessels. Warnings have been issued for American citizens to stay off of British ships. If the U.S. went to war with every country that killed American citizens as a by product of war, it would be the U.S. against the world. Charles Schwab, president of Bethlehem Steel, one of the world’s largest arms merchants, took a profitable trip to London. There, he secured orders from the British government for millions of artillery shells, as well as ten 500-ton submarines. Though the construction of such foreign vessels broke the law, Bethlehem proceeded with it and the Wilson administration did not stop them. (Dwyer) Unless the Imperial Government should now immediately declare and effect an abandonment of its present methods of submarine warfare against passenger and freight-carrying vessels, the Government of the United States can have no choice but to sever diplomatic relations with the German Empire altogether (Bass). This alone could be a strong enough message. This and stronger warnings for Americans to stay off of British vessels could save lives. Going to war would only put American lives at risk for another country’s fight. Democracy is a precious thing. If the U.S. goes to war, they will jeopardize this precious gift our forefathers gave us. The only reason to go to war would be the threat of losing our way of democracy. Germany does not threaten it. The only threat is the people who want to go to war. The

Cultural Issues in International Organizations Essay

Cultural Issues in International Organizations - Essay Example The paper tells that globalization is taken to mean internationalization. It has led to instantaneity, where things happening in a given location, in the world, can be experienced all over at the same time. This has been made possible through breakthrough in technology and the removal of restrictions that bar associations between different countries. Globalization led to easy exchange of ideas, knowledge, goods and services. It has made investments, exchange of money and merchandise possible across borders. This process has led into an open world economy. According to Ray, globalization is that which increase the extent of economic activity, international firm cooperation and easy and quick information flow. The current business organization have certain characteristics in common, to start with, there is diversity in international organizations. This diversity is both inside and outside the organizations. Internally managers must respond to diversity in the HR pool, much difference i n management system, diversity in means and ends including financial objectives to, advanced broad view, and adoption of a variety of models for a variety of business units. Externally the organization, there are diverse customer needs; myriads cultural values; an excess of stakeholders; different political, economic and legal provisions; and different competitors schemes. Another nature of the current global organization is interdependence. There is a web of interdependence in finance, governance, management, supply of goods and services, security, communication and transportation. Interdependence accelerates globalization, but it has many challenges associated with it, a break in the chain of flow can be devastating (Amann et al. 2007, p.5). There is the element of ambiguity in the business world today. There is a large amount of information with little clarification, making digestion and execution of appropriate action a challenge. For example, there is a range of accounting stan dards making monetary figure vague. Research is becoming unreliable due to the uprising of uncertainty. In addition, there is the issue of flux. The global companies are faced with unexpected changes. The more international the organization is the more prone it is to change. Managers should take precautions in order to avoid negative effects of change. Some cultural practices have an impact on communication; this has made international collaboration difficult. Exchange of knowledge, skills, goods and services between organizations across borders is possible if, they are simple, to the point, independent and involve similar cultural contexts. In contrast, it is difficult to share such knowledge

See the dis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

See the dis - Essay Example What is more important is the content transferred and the copyrights attached to the content. Thus, if there has been a transfer of some content that has been protected by copy right, then this means of file sharing is considered to be illegal. On the other hand, if the content is not protected by copyright, then file sharing may or downloading may not be illegal. Thesis The main reason why unauthorized file sharing is illegal in most countries is that it is considered equitable to theft. Arguments However, sharing or downloading may not always classify as theft. The famous economist and noble prizewinner, F. A. Hayek explains how conventional property rights and copyrights are different in reference to their supply capacities. While it may not be possible for the supply of a material property to be unlimited, it may very likely be that an intangible object has an unlimited supply (Hayek, pp. 23-25). Consequently, because there is an unlimited supply of an intangible asset, accessing that object may not affect the availability of that object to anyone. This implies that theft, where one takes the object of possession away from the owner cannot materialize in case of the intangible asset because the owner would still posses the intangible object. Thus, in essence, unauthorized file transfer is not illegal. Karl Sigfrid, the author of the op-ed submission, who has been arguing in the favor of decriminalizing file sharing and downloading, has also argued along similar lines to support his stance. Another strong arguments that have often being used to support the imposition on copyrights and thus, to make file transfers illegal is that of the potential loss that the owner of the file or the programme might have when his files are transferred to people. Take the instance of a music composer who is at loss when his music files are transferred to others. However, at a closer look the transfer of such files does not bring about any loss to the owner because in the end the owner still has an access to his files at the same time when others do (Lemely, pp. 30-34). More importantly, many artists, musicians, and composer have noted how file sharing benefits them by providing a forum for displaying and publicizing their work. Despite these arguments, the practice of file transfer and downloading is illegal when the file is copyrighted. This is because the owners of the intellectual property (the files that are transferred) state that their intangible property is subject to the same protection as a tangible asset because that intellectual property has some value attached to it. In other words downloading files without the permission of the owner is the same as encroaching on a private property or stealing. Skeptics may argue against this notion by explaining how stealing causes a loss to an individual. On the other hand, the acquisition of the files via file sharing does not add up to the cost of the owner. Nor does it cause any form of a loss of value , so comparing intellectual property with a tangible possession is absurd. However, there needs to be a closer inspection of how the usage of the intellectual property without paying for it is a cost to the owner in terms of the loss of the potential monetary benefits that he/she may have been entitled to receive otherwise. Using that intellectual

Reflective account of your own strengths and weaknesses of academic Essay

Reflective account of your own strengths and weaknesses of academic literacy competence for undertaking this course - Essay Example Yet another area where I am confident about my performance is my computer knowledge. In fact, I possess good keyboard skills. I am good in using analysis and presentation tools for various purposes that will immensely help me in my employability skills. In addition, I have the ability to learn various computer operations, and hence, computer literacy will be a positive point in my employability. However, the area where I lag behind is the ability to comprehend what I read. I think this happens because of my poor reading habit and skills. I think this lack of ability is going to have an adverse impact on my researches if not solved. Probably as a result of this, I find it difficult to do academic writing. My research skills are rather weak because firstly, I find it difficult to gather information, and secondly, I find it difficult to synthesise the information I collect. As a result, even if I collect a lot of information, my research ends up fruitless. There are certain areas related to research that I will have to improve if I want to improve my research. The very first thing is locating useful information, because â€Å"research strategies are as friendly as a puppy, as informative as a friend’s diary, and as helpful as a personal valet† (Badke , 2004, p. 176). I need to work a lot in improving my ability to reach useful information. It will have to be followed by learning how to organise what I have collected. As I possess poor study skills, what I do is to end up with a mixture of information from various sources that are not arranged appropriately. Another point that requires improvement is my ability to evaluate the information I collect. It often happens that I fail to collect relevant information and collect irrelevant ones. However, the most important problem I need to solve is my interpretation of the collected information. Probably due to my poor reading skills, my interpretation is often biased or

Fear and Immensely Powerful Body Essay Example for Free

Fear and Immensely Powerful Body Essay In This Descriptive essay, I will be writing about the Monster Grendel, from the story of Beowulf. I will be giving details about him, while he is in action in a scene of the story, which will lead to my conclusion of why I believe he is a coward, a horrible monster, above all, an obmination. Prepared to spill the blood of unsuspecting, drunken warriors in their sleep, Grendel quickly broke doen the reinforced door to the Herot with great strength and viciousness. Grendels strides were expansive. With each step, the monsters huge, feet practically flew, one after the other. The floor seemed to be instantly displaced due to his impressive agility. His eyes gleamed in the darkness, burned with a gruesome light. Before any of the soldiers had the chance to wake up, Grendel had killed on of them. Torn apart like soft bread, the corpse was drained and wholly devoured. The bounty before me is exquisite, a divine-delicacy, unkept and delightfully vulnerable Grendel speculated refering to his favorable luck. Unbeknownst to Grendel, fate had a bad future arranged for the monster. Hardly satisfied with taking only one life, the demon walked on to his next vitcim. Laying before Grendel was the Geat called Beowulf. Without particular concern for the identity of his presumed meal, he thrusted his fiendish claws towards the laying man. His arm was instantaneously seized by Beowulf. Nowhere on Earth had Grendel met a man whose hands were harder. Frozen in shock, Grendels sense was delayed. Once he realized the situation he was in, His mind flooded with fear. The horrible monster was crazy in his struggle for control. Never had Grendel shown such fear, had he ever known such fear. Grendel wished for nothing more but to escape. Resisting the beast-among-men with every ounce of strength and determination in his immensely powerful body, but to no usefulness. Grendel weakened, his muscles had been thrashed, wounded, and completely exhausted of use. Beowulf, however, was far from failure. With his legendary grip tightening every moment, Grendels body began to submit to the boundless abuse delivered by the great Beowulf With a tremendous crack, the endurance of that monster had been compromised entirely. Beowulf tore the arm from Grendel, along with a considerable portion of the corresponding torso. Grendel then fearfully scurried to the marsh which he afflicted with his presence. The despicable coward festered in both physical agony as well as emotional trauma. As Grendel slowly faded from existence, the eternal darkness in-store wore away at his soul. His lifetime of fear and disgusting maliciousness had shaped an afterlife consisting of nothing. His soul was to be shed, Grendel then waited to end. Grendel expierences the same ammount of fear when he battled with Beowulf, that humans feel when Grendel attacks. Grendels character is rather a cowardly, a vicious, a horrible one. He attacks only at night is very fearful during the battle with Beowulf.
